Pressrelease, May 25th 2020

The world’s music culture is facing the biggest challenge in its history. Since March, Asia’s nightlife was officially shut down to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. This meant that millions of employees and hundreds of thousands of artists are now suddenly without employment and the many venues, clubs, festivals, club nights and parties that are part of the Asian cities identity are on the brink of ruin. Most of them getting no support from their governments.

The launch of United We Stream Asia, which will kick off with a 3 day program from May 29th – 31st 2020 with a special weekend launch from Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. United We Stream is a non-profit streaming initiative started by Berlin clubs with the goal to raise funds for charity and to support music venues and individuals affected by Covid-19 related closures. Since United We Stream Berlin launched on March 19th of this year, in its first 2 weeks they raised over €500.000 and had 1 million hits in less than 24 hours. Having quickly and successfully expanded as far as the UK, Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Austria, Georgia and beyond, with 43 cities, 416 artists, 111 venues and counting. With United We Stream Asia, it will be the very first time the movement stretches beyond Europe and now bands together multiple countries and cities across the Asian continent.

In alliance with ARTE Concert, Clubbing TV, Clubcomission Berlin, Mixmag Asia and Homeaway Agency, UWS Asia will host a streaming platform of Asia’s venues several days a week. On one channel, we are able to take you on a journey through different countries, cities and cultures and will showcase the entire range and diversity of the club culture in Asia. Working towards the goal of raising awareness of the current situation and to not only unify Asia’s club culture but the world, building a community to support each other and giving a platform to showcase local talents to the rest of the world.

Supporters can join the movement and contribute a variable amount to Asia’s clubs via a crowdfunding platform: https://gogetfunding.com/united-we-stream-asia/

or support directly via bank transfer https://unitedwestream.asia/support. All income from the stream will go directly to a relief fund with 8% going to regional charity organisations. In the first month, this will be split down the middle and go to the Blue Dragon children’s foundation Vietnam and Scholars of Sustenance in Thailand and Indonesia.

The application and distribution of the remaining 92% of funds underlay a catalog of criteria, which will be examined by an independent jury of local Culture and Night Time Economy leaders.

With the support of the French Institute Vietnam, French Embassy and Goethe Institute we will kick off Friday May 29 at 7pm, in Ho Chi Minh City at the infamous The Observatory. Things will kick back up again at 8pm on Saturday, this time with two streams — one back in Vietnam and another in Thailand that runs through some of the best up-and-coming talents in the region. Sunday will shift the focus back on Vietnam again, but over to the Khu 13 x Haustek crew from 7pm to 11:30pm ICT. Following a program the week after from Bangkok again.
